This week, Fenway Park became more than just a place to cheer on the Red Sox with a soft pretzel.

The park had a soft opening as the state's second mass vaccination site. Starting next week, the site plans to be vaccinating upwards of 1,500 people each day, to start.

With mass-participation running events on hold, longtime Boston Marathon race director Dave McGillivray has shifted his event-organizing skills to perhaps the most important race of the 21st century: getting every American vaccinated against COVID19. McGillivray's event management company, DMSE Sports, is now working with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, CIC Health, the New England Patriots, Fallon Ambulance and Mass General Brigham Hospital in standing-up a mass vaccination site at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, home of the New England Patriots.

Boston — DMSE Sports’ Merry-Thon has kicked off its 26-day streaker challenge of fitness and holiday spirit. The Merry-Thon promises to keep participants moving, even as the weather gets colder, and to spread a bit of holiday joy, even in the midst of a pandemic. For each day over the course of 26 days, participants are asked to complete at least one mile of movement by whatever means the participant chooses, and to complete one act of kindness.

Each August, in normal times, about 13,000 people run 7 miles up the Massachusetts coastline as part of the Falmouth Road Race. To kick off this year’s event, my wife held a watch in the air and yelled, “Go!” I took off running down a narrow trail where we live—in Munich. I’d always been skeptical of virtual races, which allow runners to participate from afar. Why pay someone a registration fee to run around your own neighborhood?

This week we are featuring Dave McGillivray; an athlete, race director and resident of Andover, MA. Dave is the race director of the world’s oldest marathon, the Boston Marathon. Over forty years ago he founded DMSE Sports, which has managed or consulted on over 1,300 participatory races worldwide. Dave’s personal achievements are just as impressive: he is a runner, a multi-marathoner (over 158!), a triathlete and a multi-Ironman. He has run across America twice (you could say he is a double transcontinentaler!). We are very grateful to have him contribute to our little blog.
